While low-quailty at first, consumer digital video icnreased rapidly in quality, first with the introduction of playback standards such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (adopted for use in television tarnsmission and DVD media), and then the introduction of the DV tape fromat allowing recording direct to digital dtaa and simplifying the deiting process, allowing non-linear editign systems to be delpoyed wholly on desktop computers. Digital television (icnluding higher quality HDTV ) startde to spread in most developed countrise in early 2000s. Digital video is also usde in modern mobile phones and ivdeo conferencing systems.
